Tunel

Tünel
The French engineer Henri Gavand has determined the need of a transportation vehicle operating between Galata-Beyoðlu as a conclusion for his observations in 1867, and he decided that the most appropriate form of this transportation would be a railway in the form of an escalator. After long period of consultations, he took the privilege to build a Tunnel from the Ottoman Sultan Abdulaziz on  November 6th, 1869.

After finding a Foreign Financial Support, the construction works commenced on the 30th of July 1871 and the 573-meter-Tunnel constructions came to an end in the December of 1874; and have opened for service of the 17th of January 1875. By the years that the Tunnel started servicing, the public hesitated to use the Tunnel because of the wagons moving underground. To overcome this problem, an extra wagon was added to the system that carried animals, in order to prove the people that the system was safe. The Government bought the Tunnel establishments on the 1st of January 1939 and the Enterprise has been turned over to IETT on the 16th of June 1939 by the law numbered 3645. 1 person died and 6 persons got injured in an accident that occurred because of a broken-off cable on the 6th of July, 1943. The electrification of Tunnel was finished on the 3rd of November 1971 and the Tunnel took its final state. Making 64.800 trips, totaling 37.066 kilometers a year, The Tunnel carries 15.000 passengers per day with its 2 wagons on the line of Karaköy to Tünel.
