Buses
In order to support the Tramway Enterprise
that had been operating since 1871, license to operate 4 buses had been given to
`Dersaadet Tramway Establishment`; and so the first bus started operating in
1926. Baðlarbaþý warehouse, that had been used as the tramcar maintenance
workshop has been transformed into a garage in 1928. In 1930, 4 Renault Scania
brand buses started servicing for public transportation in Beyazýt-Karaköy line.
The company had only 3 buses when IETT took over. 23 White brand buses were
ordered in1942, however only 9 of them were purchased and the 3 Scania brand
buses were scrapped then. By the end of the same year, 25 Scania-Vabis brand
gasoline-using buses were exported from Sweden by the Trade Office and they have
been allocated for IETT`s operations. By the purchase of 15 buses that have been
made out of trucks on the 3rd of April 1943; and the purchase of 5 Scania-Vabis
brand buses in 1944, a fleet of 29 buses had been constructed. This fleet was
sent to Ankara to cover the place of the buses that burned in a fire that starts
in the bus garage of Ankara Municipality on the 17th of October
1946.
After a short while, a fleet of 16 buses that included 12 Twin
Couches, 2 Chevrolets and 1 Fargo was constructed with the efforts of the
municipality, and this fleet served until the year 1955. Bus purchasing
activities went on with the purchase of buses that bore the Skoda, Bussing and
Magirus brand, until the year 1960 and the number of buses making up the fleet
increased to 525. During years1968 and 1969 a total of 300 Leyland brand buses
were purchased and; Mercedes-Benz, Magirus and Ikarus brand buses
during1979-1980, hence a total of 495 buses have started operating with the
purchase of MAN brand buses during 1983-1984. With the purchase of MERCEDES
buses that conform the Euro 2 standards in 1997, the number of buses making up
the fleet has reached to 2580 by the end of year 2001.
